Comparing the Efficiency of IP and ATM Telephony

چکیده
Circuit switching, suited to providing real-time services due to the low and fixed switching delay, is not cost effective for building integrated services networks bursty data traffic because it is based on static allocation of resources which is not efficient with bursty data traffic. Moreover, since current circuit switching technologies handle flows at rates which are integer multiples of 64 Kb/s, low bit rate voice encodings cannot be taken advantage of without aggregating multiple phone calls on a single channel. This work explores the real-time efficiency of IP telephony, i.e. the volume of voice traffic with deterministically guaranteed quality related to the amount of network resources used. IP and ATM are taken into consideration as packet switching technology for carrying compressed voice and it is compared to circuit switching carrying PCM (64 Kb/s) encoded voice. ADPCM32 is the voice encoding scheme throughout most of the paper. The impact of several network parameters, among which the number of hops traversed by a call, on the real-time efficiency is studied.

Reprint ATM AAL2 protocol efficiency for supporting Voice over DSL
Voice-over-DSL (VoDSL) technology provides a major boost to competition in local telephony market by greatly reducing the cost of local access. VoDSL leverages the high-speed transmission of DSL technology to deliver multiple telephony circuits plus high-speed data over a single loop. Although the data services delivered over xDSL are usually IP-based, native ATM is the ideal technology choice ...

Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) are two switching technologies that are being used (or proposed) for large-scale integrated services networks. Integrated services networks are designed to support real time services, such as telephony as well as data services. Both technologies have the potential to radically change the economics and operations of telephone services. ...
متن کاملDimensioning Links for IP Telephony
Packet loss is an important parameter for dimensioning network links or traffic classes carrying IP telephony traffic. We present a model based on the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) which calculates packet loss probabilities for a set of superpositioned voice input sources and the specified link properties. We do not introduce another new model to the community, rather try and verify o...
